Ryan Newman Biography
Mr. Newman is the FAA Safety Team (FAASTeam) Program Manager for the San Antonio Flight Standards District Office, responsible for Aviation Safety promotion in southern Texas. Mr. Newman has been with the the Federal Aviation Administration for twelve years as an Aviation Safety Inspector and as the FAASTeam Program Manager. He holds the Airline Transport Pilot Certificate for Single & Multi-Engine Airplanes, and the Commercial Instrument Certificate for Single-Engine Seaplanes and Helicopters. He is an Instructor Pilot in Airplanes and Helicopters. Mr. Newman is a Chief Warrant Officer-5 (CW5), retired from the Army with a wide and varied background. He served the Army on active duty, Reserve and National Guard as a Combat Engineer, Master Parachutist, Jump Master, Green Beret, Survival Instructor, Aviation Safety Officer and Blackhawk Pilot. His Army career spanned 30-years, including three combat tours – - Desert Storm as Pilot-in-Command of the first Medevac helicopter in theater (1990 / 91) - Afghanistan as the Kandahar Airfield Commander (2002), and - The Invasion of Iraq as a Battalion Safety Officer (2003) Mr. Newman has received, among his many awards, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (3), the Air Medal (3), including one with “V” Device for heroism in combat, the Combat Medical Badge, Master Aviator Wings, Master Parachutist Badge, and Air Assault Badge. Mr. Newman has been inducted into the Order of Saint Michael (Army Aviation Honor Society), and into the Order of Saint Maurice (Army Infantry Honor Society). For outstanding performance of duty in Afghanistan, Mr. Newman was honored as the 2002 Aviation Safety Officer of the Year, by the Army Aviation Association of America. Mr. Newman has provided instruction to Army Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operators as a Training and Development Consultant at the Army Unmanned Aircraft Systems Training Battalion, Fort Huachuca, Arizona. Mr. Newman’s experience also includes employment as a Flight Instructor, Corporate Pilot, Charter Pilot, and as an Airline Captain for Northwest Airlink. Mr. Newman has extensive experience as an Occupational Safety and Health Professional with qualification as a Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP) at the Master level, by the International Board for Certification of Safety Managers. In this capacity Mr. Newman has performed as the Safety Manager for the largest healthcare facility in the entire military, Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Mr. Newman has an extensive background in Aviation Accident Investigation during his years as an Army Aviation Safety Officer, through education at the Bachelor and Masters level with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, through the Aviation Accident Investigation Course at the National Transportation Safety Board Academy, and through training at the Transportation Safety Institute. Staying true to his Aviation roots, Mr. Newman is an airplane owner, and can be found most weekends at a Texas airport participating in Pilot Seminars, Instructor Workshops, and Community Fly-in’s. He is indeed, an ambassador for General Aviation. Mr. Newman is married for the past 36-years to the former Carol Dahl of Everett, Massechusetts, a retired Army Nurse Corps Colonel, and has two sons; Christopher, a West Point Graduate, Blackhawk Pilot and combat veteran of Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne Division; and William, a Texas A&M graduate and Army Signal Corps Officer, currently serving in Germany. |
